About HP

HP, formally known as Hewlett Packard, was established in 1939 by William Redington Hewlett and Dave Packard. Interestingly, Hewlett and Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

The company is most famous for producing computer hardware, and was the world's largest PC manufacturer until Apple overtook them in 2010. However, this was also the year the company decided to acquire Palm for $1.2 billion, buying the company a number of valuable patents and Palm's webOS mobile software.

After the struggling to sell the HP Pre 3 smartphone and TouchPad tablet, HP announced in August 2011 that it would exit the smartphone and tablet computer business, shifting its focus to higher-margin "strategic priorities of cloud, solutions and software with an emphasis on enterprise, commercial and government markets". It has since revealed plans to license the software which has since been renamed webOS 1.0, ahead of its release in September 2012.
