Motorola is a global communications company based near Chicago, Illinois with its mobile devices division based in Libertyville, IL. The company was founded in 1928 by Paul and Joseph Galvin, who originally named the company Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The company were initially focussed on the production of car radios, and adopted the name Motorola in 1930.
Motorola created the first ever mobile phone, the DynaTAC (DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) 8000X in 1973, and in 1991 the company demonstrated the world's first working prototype of a mobile phone using GSM standard in Hanover, Germany. By 1998, mobile phones accounted for two thirds of Motorola's gross revenue, and although boasting just a 4.5% marketshare in 2009, Motorola's finances continue to grow, reporting a profit of $162 million in Q2 2010.
Motorola are well known for their clamshell phones, the most famous probably being the RAZR series, followed by the PEBL, RIZR and KRZR series. Although their handsets mainly operated on their proprietary flatform, their first Android handset was released in the UK in December 2009, known as the Motorola Milestone. They continue to focus on Google's Android OS, and are expected to release their first tablet in 2011.
