About The Vodafone Network

Vodafone, headquartered in Newbury, made the UK's first mobile call at a few minutes past midnight on 1 January 1985, and by 1987, was recognized as the world's largest mobile network. In 2010, Vodafone UK is the 3rd largest provider of broadband and telecommunications in terms of subscribers, ranking behind O2 and Everything Everywhere.

Vodafone made its debut in 1982, after the Racal Electronics Group won its bid for the private sector UK Cellular license. They set up the Racal Telecomms Division, and named the new network Vodafone, which comes from "voice data phone". This title was chosen by the company to reflect the provision of voice and data services over mobile phones.

In 1991, Vodafone launched its first GSM mobile phone service, which was also the first of its kind in the UK. This isn't the only first under its belt, as Vodafone were also the first network operator to launch data, fax and SMS services over a digital network, and the first network to launch a Pre-Pay analogue package in 1996,
