Motorola to roll out Android 2.2 updates this year

August 23rd, 2010

Motorola users in the UK will be glad to hear that they have have scheduled a release date to roll out Froyo updates across some of its Android range. Users can expect the Android 2.2 updated before the end of the year. Hooray!

The upgrade from Android 2.1 to 2.2 is pretty remarkable. Its speed proves the most considerable change, allowing applications to run 5 times faster and its internet browser to run 3 times quicker. Significant improvements can be seen on the home-screen interface, now providing users with a ‘tips widget’ to help them out if they are just getting started, alongside more dedicated shortcuts for the phone, its application launcher and web browser. Its security has been improved ten-fold too, giving the user the option to delete their personal information if the phone ever gets stolen, and to protect their handset with a numerical password. Its photography and video capabilities have also been improved, on-screen buttons for the camera making the software easier to use and better video quality is now gained from enabling the handset’s LED flash.

A while back, Motorola announced they may not be updating their handsets at all, so this should come as a relief to Motorola customers. The Motorola Milestone and Droid are set to receive the Froyo updates, but no details have yet been released about the Motorola Milestone XT720, although it’s likely this handset will be seeing the much-anticipated upgrade.

Bad news though: there will be no upgrade for the Motorola Dext or Backflip. Even worse news? They won’t even be able to upgrade to Android 2.1.

We’ll keep you updated, fingers crossed they may change their minds – maybe?
