iOS 4.2 boosts performance of the iPhone 3G

November 9th, 2010

Although iOS updates are usually only favourable to Apple‘s most recent releases, iOS 4.2 promises to bring a much needed boost to the iPhone 3G, released back in 2008.

The same can’t be said for iOS 4.0, which caused a lot of 3G users to suffer from slow, frozen handsets. Apple promised to fix the damage caused by this update with iOS 4.1 in September, which struggled to improve the 3G’s performance. So, can iOS 4.2 clear the handset of its problems?

A video from TiPb shows the iOS 4.2 update running on the iPhone 3G, and although the device’s hardware isn’t as impressive as the iPhone 4, it shows the handset’s performance is much improved. Text entry looks speedy and scrolling through web pages looks seamless, although it did take the handset a few seconds to respond to multi-touch gestures. The 3G even passed TiPb’s texting when using Google Street View, which is good news for users of the handset.

Rumours are suggesting that the iOS 4.2 update will be landing later today, but Apple are yet to confirm this.
