Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 multi-touch update begins

January 19th, 2011

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10Sony Ericsson has began rolling out an Android update in Japan, enabling multi-touch on its range of Xperia X10 handsets.

The update, available to customers on Japanese network NTT DoCoMo, will finally bring multi-touch gestures to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and the QWERTY-sporting X10 Mini Pro.

Once the OTA update is installed, it’s likely that the handset will be limited to pinch to zoom gestures, with support for multi-touch gaming and third party apps looking unlikely. According to Sony Ericsson, this is because the “digitizer in the X10 is not perfect when it comes to multi-touch”.

Although Sony Ericsson has admitted that multi-touch on the handsets “won’t be perfect”, it’s sure to cheer up users of the X10 series who have recently found out that their handsets won’t be upgraded past Android 2.1. Still, we’re pretty sure that users would prefer a tasty Gingerbread-flavoured treat rather than limited pinch to zoom gestures.

Have a watch of the video below to see working pinch to zoom on the Xperia X10!

With contracts being typically 2 years, SonyEricsson’s decision to abandon updates to the Xperia X10 series in less than one year is disgraceful, especially with the benefits of 2.2 (adobe flash, install to SD, processor optimizations, etc.).nnAnd with SonyEricsson demonstrating this attitude with the existing, high-performance Xperia X10 series (which is more than capable of running 2.2, 2.3, and later), why would anyone trust them to do any different on the new Xperia arc?nnThe meaning of SonyEricsson’s choices now are obvious to informed consumers: if you want to get the improvements to your phone that come from new versions of android, avoid SonyEricsson. HTC and others have a *much better* track record for providing updates to their customers.nn(note: I encourage other SonyEricsson customers to re-post this message or one like it to every article about future SE products.) They are determined to not support their customers unless we force them too. Their demand for new customers is our bargaining chip.
