Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get Android 2.3

March 28th, 2011

In an out of the blue turnaround, Sony Ericsson has revealed that its much-loved Xperia X10 will get a taste of Gingerbread after all.

Back in January, the London-based manufacturer disappointed millions of users by announcing that it wouldn’t push out any further updates to its X10 handset, meaning that users were stuck on Android 2.1 (Éclair) forever, an ageing version of Google‘s OS.

However, following thousands of complains, there seems to have been a turnaround at Sony Ericsson HQ. Taking to its blog, the company has announced that a taste of Gingerbread is on its way, and will be landing late Q2/early Q3 2011. Sony Ericsson’s Rikard Skogberg explains:

“The Xperia X10 will receive similar software and functionality that we have in our new 2011 Xperia smartphones. The current ambition is to provide the majority of functionality of the Gingerbread platform, as well as the Sony Ericsson specific UI and features that are not  restricted by hardware limitations (for example no HDMI out). The final scope of the software is still work in progress but we are working to minimize the differences.”

It may sound promising, but it’s not all good news. Sony Ericsson has announced that users of the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro won’t be treated to the Android 2.3 update, along with users of the Xperia X8.

The exact release date for the update is still to be confirmed, although to get your hands on it, you’ll have to connect you’re device to your PC to receive the Gingerbread goodness.
