Sticking to its February promise, HTC has confirmed that its Desire Z handset will be getting Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) in “coming weeks”.
That’s according to HTC Germany, which took to Facebook to announce the good news. It said: “Thanks to all who wait patiently for the Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire. We are just beginning to the final stages of testing and planning, with the rollout of FOTA updates in the coming weeks. It will take some time now before we all will reach it. This will be done by the end of the month.”
Once the over-the-air (OTA) update hits HTC’s QWERTY-slider, it’ll equip the handset with a bundle of tweaks. These include a slightly re-jigged interface, a more intuitive onscreen keyboard (for those not so keen on those QWERTY keys), one touch word selection copy and paste, and improved speed and power management.
The update’s exact release date is still to be confirmed, but expect it to drop before the end of the month. It’ll first be arriving on SIM free handsets, so those with network locked handset may be kept waiting. We’ve been in touch with the UK networks for further information.
