Nokia has announced its plans to axe another 4,000 jobs, in a move that will see the majority of its manufacturing moved to Asia.

The job cuts will be made across three factories, Nokia today announced:  2,300 from Hungary, 700 in Mexico and 1,000 more in its hometown of Finland. These three factories will continue to work at a reduced level, the Finnish firm promised, and will focus on creating boutique customized devices for the American and European markets.

“With the planned changes, our factories at Komarom, Reynosa and Salo will continue to play an important role serving our smartphone customers,” said Niklas Savander, Nokia EVP of Markets.

“They give us a unique ability to both provide customization and be more responsive to customer needs. Shifting device assembly to Asia is targeted at improving our time to market. By working more closely with our suppliers, we believe that we will be able to introduce innovations into the market more quickly and ultimately be more competitive.”

“We recognize the planned changes are difficult for our employees and we are committed to supporting our personnel and their local communities during the transition,” Savander added.
