Sony’s Ericsson buyout complete, renames as Sony Mobile Communications

Sony Xperia SSony‘s high-profile acquisition of Ericsson’s stake in Sony Ericsson is complete, it has been confirmed, which has seen the firm renamed as Sony Mobile Communications.

Sony’s Ericsson buyout was announced back in October, and saw the firm acquiring Ericsson’s 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson for of €1.05 billion (916 million). This deal will see Sony manufacturing its own-branded Android – and possibly Vita OS – smartphones, such as the Sony Xperia S handset, with more tipped to arrive at Mobile World Congress. Existing Xperia devices, such as the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc, will continue to wear the Sony Ericsson brand.

Sony Mobile Communications, as its now officially known, will aim to “integrate the mobile phone business as a vital element of its electronics business, with the aim of accelerating convergence between Sony’s line-up of network-enabled consumer electronics products, including smartphones, tablets, TVs and PCs”, the firm announced back in October.
