Sony Xperia S getting Ice Cream Sandwich by end of May

May 16th, 2012

Sony’s latest batch of flagship devices have had a bit of a shaky landing. After the recent news that Samsung and HTC together make up 90% of UK Android phone sales, it seems that they’ve been left in the lurch.

Sony’s case wasn’t helped by the fact that Xperia S didn’t come pre-loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich, making them feel more prev-gen than next-gen. Thankfully, a customer support rep on Sony’s official forums has now let slip that the update will come ‘somewhere around late May/early June.’

Considering how long ICS has now been around for, it’s high time that Sony jumped on the bandwagon. The Xperia S will be receiving its update at around the same time as all the other major Xperia phones, including the Xperia arc, Xperia Play and Xperia neo.

Ice Cream Sandwich is the biggest overhaul to the Android interface yet, allowing for more customisation, improved voice input, texting and spell-checking, and better monitoring of your network data usage. Once Sony get the update, then maybe people will start paying a bit more attention to their hitherto overlooked phones.
