HTC get Playstation-certified

June 6th, 2012

playstation mobileWith E3, the biggest video-games showcase of the year, now in full swing, Sony surprised a few people in saying that they had teamed up with HTC in bringing Playstation games to their phones.

“HTC is focused on delivering innovative mobile experiences for people everywhere and SCE’s immersive world of gaming will bring compelling entertainment to HTC One customers across the globe,” said Kouji Kodera, Chief Product Officer, HTC Corporation.

The announcement is suggestive of several things. Firstly, that Sony are willing to sacrifice content that was originally exclusive to their devices in order to make some headway on the software side of things. Sony’s Playstation-certified devices, such as the Xperia Play and Xperia S, are not nearly as popular as HTC’s handsets, so it seems a wise move to spread their reputable gaming services to bigger platforms.

Secondly, this also seems to quash the rumours of Sony releasing an Xperia Play 2. A unique feature of such a device would be its ability to play Playstation games, but with HTC now onboard, there just doesn’t appear to be much purpose for such a device.

Along with announcing their partnership with HTC, Sony have renamed Playstation Suite to Playstation Mobile as part of their rebranding process. This announcement comes at a convenient time for HTC gamers, as Nyko recently revealed a nifty bluetooth gaming controller for Android devices. Game on!
