Samsung show off NFC-enabled ‘TecTiles’

June 13th, 2012

samsung tectileNFC is the next big thing, don’t you know? The super-fast, super-close-distance wireless technology is to be given a test run at the Olympics, and even the fusty old Post Office is getting involved.

Now, Samsung are following in the footsteps of Sony‘s Smart Tags by making their very own TecTiles. These little bits of matter can be set up with various sequences of actions that get activated as soon as your phone makes contact with them.

So if you have a TecTile by your bed, you can program it to turn off all internet connectivity, go into silent mode, and set an alarm. Or you can have one in the car and tap it to turn on the SatNav, hands-free mode etc. You can also program them to check you in to places via Facebook or Foursquare.

Sure, TecTiles may not be life-changing gizmos, but they’ll certainly make life that little bit easier (and subsequently make you that little bit lazier). Currently, they’re retailing for $14 in the US, with no UK date announced yet.
