mozilla firefox mobileMany people don’t really know what to make of this perplexing entity otherwise known as Firefox’s own mobile operating system. Some call it the future, while others call it doomed to failure, but the idea of a fully HTML-based OS is certainly an intriguing one.

Speaking with GoMo news, Telefonica Digital CEO Matthew Key, revealed several new details about the OS. Significantly, he quickly ruled out the idea of a Firefox handset by stating, ‘We don’t want to enter the hardware space.’

Another interesting emergence was that the first handset to run the OS will cost under $100 and will be released in Brazil in the first quarter of 2013.

The Firefox OS will run entirely on HTML 5, which they believe will make the platform instantly accessible to the many developers already familiar with HTML coding. Carlos Domingo, director for product development & Innovation at Telefonica Digital, also revealed that around 75% of the sold on Google Play and iOS are HTML-based anyway. This is good news for developers looking to port apps to Mozilla’s OS.

What do you think of Firefox’s OS? Is it a future competitor to iOS and Android‘s dominance, or just another pretender? Give us your thoughts.
