Nokia reign as the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, boasting a 30% marketshare in Q3 2010. The Finnish company consists of over 123,000 employees in 120 countries, with their handset's selling in 150 countries around the world.
Nokia started out in 1865 as a groundwood pulp mine in Southwestern Finland, and merged with Finnish Rubber and Finnish Cable works in 1967. It was in 1984 when Nokia launched the Mobira Talkman, one of the world's first transportable phones, which was followed by becoming a leader in the development GSM technology. Since then, Nokia have moved forward leaps and bounds, and today reign as the most successful mobile phone manufacturer of all time, having sold their billionth phone in 2005.
In 2007 we saw the introduction of Ovi, a servce offering users a "personal dashboard" where they can share media with friends, download music and access maps directly from their handset. The Ovi application Store was launched in 2009, which is now home to some of the most popular apps on the market.
Nokia are now enjoying the success of their Symbian^3 operating system, with plans to release MeeGo in 2011. This upcoming platform is a joint venture between Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo, which will bring a state of the art operating system to the company's future releases.
