Editor's Review of the X6

Reviewed by Michael Gabriel on 29th March 2010

Exuding an ideal mix of fashion and functionality, the Nokia X6 heralds the Xseries range. This handset is clad in either a white casing with blue accents, or a black casing with red streaks. It weighs 122 grams and measures 111 x 51 x 13.8 millimetres. Dominating the front part of this mobile phone is a TFT touch screen that measures 81.28 millimetres and displays 16.7 million colours on 640 x 360 pixels. A full QWERTY keyboard complements this handset's display screen. It also has MP3 and polyphonic ringtones that alert users of incoming calls, text messages, and other alarms.

This handset is powered by Symbian 9.4 operating system with Series S60 5th Edition software. It is a quad band mobile phone that supports GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, and GSM 1900 networks, as well as HSDPA 900 and 2100. As such, this handset makes a good companion for travellers, but its reach depends on the service provider of its user. This mobile phone also offers the flight mode option.

The Nokia X6 enables users to hop from one Web site to another with its built-in HTML, WML & XHTML Nokia browser. With this handset's WLAN Wi-Fi capability, on-the-go users may go online with in designated hotspots. Users may share files with compatible devices like personal computers, laptops, other handsets, printers, and scanners with this mobile phone's USB feature. Its Bluetooth facility makes wireless data transfers possible, making entangled wires and cables a thing of the past. With its built-in EDGE and GPRS technologies, this mobile phone promises faster data transfer and Internet download rates. Moreover, this handset runs on 3G HSDPA, making it a reliable multi-tasking device.

The Nokia X6's messaging services include SMS or text and MMS or multimedia messaging. It also allows users to exchange instant messages, or access their e-mail accounts, as well as view, send or receive e-mail messages with attachment. This handset also works as a busy user's reliable assistant with its organiser tools such as contacts, calendar, clock, alarm clock, calculator, vibration alert, and to-do list. Nokia integrated into the X6 a A-GPS navigation system that is compatible with Ovi Maps application to keep users guided as they tread unfamiliar routes.

For ease in calls, the Nokia X6 has pre-installed speaker phones. It also enables users to engage in conference calls with up to six contacts. This handset also supports call log, call waiting, call hold, and call divert. It has a front facing camera for 3G video calls.

The Nokia X6 bursts with features to keep users entertained. It comes with a 5-Megapixel camera complete with Carl Zeiss optics for photos of optimum quality. Its imaging features include auto focus, 4x digital zoom, and dual LED flash. Users will also have options when it comes to capturing photos, with this integrated camera's capture mode, flash mode, and scene mode selections. This camera also doubles as a video recorder with a recording speed of 30 frames per second, 4x digital zoom, as well as automatic or night scene mode options. There is a dedicated camera key that makes instant photo snapping or video recording a breeze.

Music lovers need not grab other devices to enjoy their favourite tunes. The Nokia X6 makes a good music companion with its integrated music player that supports MP3 and AAC formats. A graphic equaliser adjustment, a bass booster, and a volume key allow users to adjust music quality to suit their preference. To further boost music enjoyment, this built-in music player has added features of playlist display, music search option, and album graphics display.

This handset also has an FM radio facility complete with RDS, which not only allows users to enjoy music but also offers them info access to sports, weather, or current events data from their favourite radio stations. This handset offers users gaming selections of Spore, D Mix Tour, and Asphalt 4, among other games in Java format. It also supports games downloaded from the Internet.

This mobile phone offers 32 Gigabytes of internal memory. It has 8.5 hours of talk time and 401 hours of standby time.

The Nokia X6 has drawn flak for its reportedly slow processor. Other unsatisfied users contend that this handset does not quite feel smooth, and can be bulky. Nevertheless, this mobile phone's capacitive screen is gaining praises for its responsiveness and crisp display and clear resolution. Happy users like this handset's call quality as well.
