Editor's Review of the Stockholm
Described by Orange as an "amazing smartphone for an amazing price", the so-called Stockholm is a re-branded version of the Huawei U8160 - otherwise known as the Vodafone Smart.
The Orange Stockholm is a good looking smartphone, but lacks the pizzazz of Vodafone's offering, which comes equipped with customisable back covers. Unlike the 'Smart', the Stockholm goes for a three-button Android bar, with a physical button below. Although this adds a bit of bulk to the handset, its glossy black casing measures in at a just 13mm thick.
The bargain-priced handset comes running Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS, which dresses its 2.8-inch (240 x 320) capacitive touchscreen. As well as the usual Google apps (GMail, Search, Talk), the handset comes pre-loaded with Orange Widgets. These include Orange App Store, Games, Messenger and Wednesday. However, Orange's app store is fairly limited, so you may be better off sticking to the Android Market where you now have the choice of over 200,000 apps.
In terms of entertainment, the Swedish-themed smartphone is by no means limited. There's a built-in MP3 player, an FM radio and a 3.2 megapixel camera on its rear - capable of capturing Facebook-worthy snapshots. We were also pleased to discover that there's both HSDPA and WiFi onboard, although surfing on the tiny screen is a little bit restrictive.
It's features don't end there, either. You'll also find a reasonable 528MHz processor, built-in email support, Swype text input, and up to 32GB of expandable memory.
Although we're slightly swaying towards the Vodafone Smart, Orange's Stockholm is only marginally different. For just eighty-quid you can bag a decent Android smartphone, complete with an alright camera and high-speed connectivity. We're just sad it doesn't come with those customizable back covers.
