About Palm
Palm is a smartphone manufacturer based in Sunnyvale, California, and was founded in 1992 by Jeff Hawkins. The company was formed to create PDA devices for consumers, and they launched the Palm Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 in 1996. This gadget is labelled to have sparked the mobile-computing revolution, and has since featured on the list of "The 50 Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years". Having expanded their smartphone range over the years, Palm accounted for 5.7% of mobile subscribers in the US in Q1 2010.
While the Palm Pilot came equipped the the manufacturer's proprietary Palm OS onboard, the 2006 Palm Treo came operating on Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS, which also features on four later editions of the handset. In 2009, Palm announced a new operating system, webOS, which would eventually replace Palm OS in their newest devices. On April 28 2010, HP announced that they would be acquiring Palm for $1.2 billion, a deal which was finalised on July 1 2010.
After the deal had been done, the webOS platform made its debut on the Palm Pre 2. Despite its new features, the handset is not supported by any UK networks, and is only available SIM free.
