Editor's Review of the Tocco

Reviewed by Michael Gabriel on 5th June 2008

Samsung officially introduced the F480, also called Samsung SGH-480, in February 2008. In various parts of the world, the phone is also called Samsung TouchWiz. In an effort to consciously adapt to differing regions, there will be differing names as it is marketed and sold throughout the world. In the UK, for example, the phone will be known more popularly as the Samsung Tocco. Aptly named, Tocco is the Italian translation for the word Touch. It was launched in the UK in May 2008.

Visually, the Samsung Tocco is a touchscreen phone in a subtly chrome-trimmed, aluminum candybar design integrated with a black silk finish. Because of its sleek external features, the Tocco is said to be at par with the Samsung Armani and the LG Prada phones. Users can opt to doll up the Samsung Tocco with leather cover to make it look like a fashionable accessory besides being a utilitarian device.

A bigger part of the Samsung Tocco's front part takes up the 71.12-millimeter QVGA 262,000-colour screen that is engineered with the sensing technology called TouchWiz on its user interface. The handset's touch-sensitive feature is driven by its reception of the user's finger rather than of mere touch. In this regard, the screen cannot be possibly activated by other objects besides the finger. In this light, closest comparisons have been between Apple's touchscreen iPhone and the Samsung F700. The Tocco belongs to the same mobile phone model or line as Samsung F490, sold as F490 Nerva in the UK.

This gorgeous touchscreen displays 240 x 320 pixels that ensure high resolution. It is a lightweight at a fixed 100.6 grams, which is considerably slim for a 3G-enabled mobile phone. The handset's dimensions at 11.8mm x 55mm x 95.9mm also make this mobile an ultra slim fashion phone. Expectedly, the device is easy to carry because it is essentially a pocket-friendly mobile phone. Moreover, its clutter-free design fits the user's hand just right. Its touch buttons are large enough for users to type, hence, the touchscreen feature is a breeze to use.

Appearance aside, the Samsung Tocco also boasts of other key features. It is 3G-enabled, with a downloading rate that reaches a maximum of 7.2 Megabytes per second, thanks to the HSDPA technology. It is also a triband mobile phone driven by Edge, GSM and GPRS technologies. It runs on a 1000 mAh battery that offers a standby duration of 300 hours and talk time of roughly 3 hours. It can also store an enormous number of files with a 240-Megabyte internal memory. This built-in memory can be expanded by adding a microSD memory of up to 8 Gigabytes.

The Samsung Tocco also houses a 5-Megapixel digital camera complete with LED flash, face-detection capability and autofocus. The built-in camera has a stabiliser which ensures steady photo shots that prevent hand movements from affecting the clarity and overall quality of the shots. It flaunts its video features that allow playback and recording of video footages. In addition, there are easy-to-navigate and user-friendly video editing applications for enhancing purposes of videos recorded. It even allows streaming of videos in MPEG4, H263 and H264 formats.

The Samsung Tocco also has a music player for user entertainment, which supports MP3, AAC and AAC audio formats. It also carries an RDS-enabled FM radio to boot. It introduces a certain feature it coins as Shazam, which resembles the TrackID system of Sony Ericsson handsets. The Shazam service identifies the track that the user is listening to. The Tocco's phone-to-compatible-device connectivity is possible with its Bluetooth 2.0-supporting feature that comes with the A2DP technology.

With its winning features that users expect of modern handsets, the Samsung Tocco has not escaped criticisms, although not too many. According to a user, it may be a deal-breaker that it is missing Wi-Fi connectivity. Others have said the phone would have better chances of emerging as a stronger product in the market if it functioned on quadband for better world roaming functionality.

An unbelievably reliable phone I have used for over two years.
A great quality 5mp camera that delivers surprisingly good results, even by today's standards.
The handset has a sturdy build that has shrugged off knocks other phones wouldn't, but it's definitely worth investing in a screen protector.
Cons would be the message capacity isn't great, and despite the phones OS slightly resembling an IPhone, it's in no way customizable albeit ringtones and wallpapers. The factory settings photos (infuriatingly) can't be removed and the volume button on the side is prone to randomly turning up keypad tones whenever it likes.

Excellent touch screen phone got mine as a replacement when i broke the screen of my lg kp 500 cookie. In comparison to the lg this phone is in a different league great to look at build quality is as yo would expect from a top of the range phone it feels quality when you hold it and is so superior to the lg (as it should be considering the price difference). all the functions and menus are easy to use and the touch screen is a breeze to use and all you need is a very light touch or stroke with a finger while the lg needed a good prod with the stylus. In conclusion the best phone i have ever had (and i have had mobiles since the first gen digital phones came out). I also updated the firmware to the le flir and you get loads of extra widgets and can change the font of the phone text to 3 types. Recommended

I hate this phone:( the dictionary does my head in, coming up constantly with stupid words that make no sense. The screen has got really scratched and you can hardly see anything on it outside the house. Would never recommend you buy this phone. Also i keep pressing the language button by accident all the time and end up with italian words. very irritating phone should have stuck with sony erricson

Ive had it for over a month now. I love it! Its really good.. ill just point out bad things though.. My main problem is the dictionary saving mistake words (tgat instead of that / wD instead of we, etc), there is no way to delete them. Also when you text on the area of the letters it shows a choice of language and dictionary.. i find i am always hitting in the language button and thats how i managed to save incorrect words into the dictionary by typing foreign languages accidently. The language and dictionary option should be able to be chosen on another settings page as it gets into the way of texting.. lastly i will agree that when you put your phone on hold and default pictures show up its annoying, however i still love this phone and the positives overcome the negatives so i will recommend it.

It's good but it's just not as good as the iPhone or the new LG Arena. The interface is OK but a bit clumsy, and the touch screen is super sensitive which makes it a bit hard to use for texting as I type lots of letters by mistake. That said, the quality of photos is impressive and I also use the radio which is good because it doesn't have much space for music.

Hardly any phones come with a decent case but this one does which is a great move, especially because it's a touch screen and otherwise that could get damaged easily. The whole thing itself does seem a bit delicate though. Nice design in black, and it has never crashed or anything like that. My friend has an LG Viewty but I think that this is much easier to use and I can find everything easily on the menus.

It has loads of good features but it doesn't have as good reception as the Nokia 6300. I know it's the phone, not the network, because they are on the same network and the 6300 works all around my house and the Tocco just doesn't. But anywhere else, it's good.

The camera on the Samsung Tocco is good for everything except moving shots. Then it gets really blurry. Other than that it has autofocus and a flash which is OK for closeups but doesn't do anything for night shots of buildings or backgrounds. Still, not bad for a mobile phone.

I got the Tocco like a year ago and am still happy with it. I use it for the internet when I'm travelling and the browser is awesome with the touchpad to drag the pages around. Except that I can't get Adobe Flash to work on the browser. I use the email program with my Gmail account with IMAP so that all the emails are still there when I use my computer. Sometimes it hangs a bit just before it syncs with Gmail, but that might be the network, not the phone.
