A Preview of the Sony Ericsson Xperia active
The Sony Ericsson Xperia active takes some obvious design cues from the Motorola Defy, and is aimed at targeting sporty folk who can't bare to miss a call or not see the latest tweets.
The compact handset is both dust proof and water resistant. As well as withstanding 1 meter of water for a whole 30 minutes, it comes with wet finger tracking technology which means that the screen still responds when the users fingers are wet.
Fitting in with its sporty nature, Sony Ericsson has added a host of sports related apps for keeping track of your fitness. There's an on-screen heart rate monitor enabled by ANT+, alongside an iMapMyFitness application for monitoring your day to day performance. There's even a hook at the bottom of the active and a wrist strap to make sure you don't lose your phone.
Hardware-wise, the Sony Ericsson Xperia active packs a 1GHz processor and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS, powering 3-inch (320 x 480) Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine. This'll arrive dressed in SE's TimeScape UI, so you'll have one-touch access to Facebook and Twitter.
On its rear you'll find a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, capable of recording 720p HD video. For additional entertainment, theres a built-in Sony Ericsson Music Player, an FM radio, and access to over 200,00 apps from the Android Market.
Other specifications include Bluetooth, HSDPA and WiFi connectivity, integrated GPS powered by Google Maps and up to 32GB of expandable memory.
In the box you'll find a sport stereo headset, an arm case, wrist strap and a 2GB microSD card.
There's still no word on the handset's pricing and release date, and it's yet to be snapped up by UK networks. Once released, it'll be available in Orange/Black and White/Black flavours.
A full review will be published here once the phone has been released.
