About Toshiba
Toshiba, founded in 1939 by the merger of Shibaura Seisakusho and Hakunetsusha, is a Japanese electronics manufacturer focusing on computer systems, semiconductors and consumer electronics. The company is responsible for a number of firsts in its hometown of Japan, including the first transistor television in 1954, and the colour video phone in 1971. In 2010, Toshiba was named the world's fifth-largest personal computer vendor, after after Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer and Lenovo.
In 2010, Toshiba also announced that they had agreed to merge their mobile phone business with Fujitsu Limited, in a bid to become the number one handset provider in Japan. Since then, the firm has released a number of Android powered tablets.
The company has announced that it plans to develop more "compact, highly functional handsets", confirming its intent to continue producing high-end smartphones.
